Applications

Apps we've built: our LAN party leaderboard, a VNC viewer for Windows and a household budget planner. We made them for ourselves first, so they do one job and try to do it well. All free, and most are open source.

The LAN Party Leaderboard display screen: live leaderboard, current game, schedule, last result and servers

v1.3.1 Open source · PHP · MIT licence

LAN Party Leaderboard

Run your own LAN party scoreboard: a live leaderboard and big-screen display, run from a simple admin panel, with optional PUBG auto-import. Download it, host it, and make it better.

.zip · 728 KB · full source, README, tests

Checksums

  • Needs PHP 8+ web hosting (e.g. IONOS) — no database
  • Works offline at the LAN — no CDNs or cloud services

What's in it

  • Big-screen display mode for the TV — 1080p to 4K and ultrawide
  • Live leaderboard — points, wins, K/D and podium, worked out from match results
  • LAN nights — each night has its own players and leaderboard, with past nights kept as history
  • Admin panel — players, games, matches, schedule, servers and announcements
  • Quick scoring from your phone — big − / + buttons and one-tap winner
  • PUBG auto-import — kills, assists and chicken dinners land on the board by themselves, plus Top medic, Most assists and Most knocks badges
  • Player stats — all-time numbers per player over any time period, with a monthly chart and CSV export
  • Backup & restore, sample data, and security built in

Get it running

  1. Unzip and upload the folder to your web space (e.g. as /lan/), including the hidden .htaccess files.
  2. Visit /lan/install.php and create your admin login.
  3. Delete install.php, add your players and games, and open display.php on the big screen.

Full instructions — including Nginx and running it on your own PC — are in the README.

Build on it

Plain PHP, vanilla JavaScript and JSON files, with no frameworks and no build step, so it's easy to read and change. Ideas: more game integrations, tournaments and brackets, team modes, new display views.

Includes end-to-end test suites (Python 3) so you can check your changes.

v1.0 Windows · Free

MacVNC

A small, fast VNC viewer for Windows — made for connecting to a Mac's built-in Screen Sharing, with scaling that actually looks good.

Download MacVNC .zip · 46 KB · includes the .exe, source & readme

Just the .exe (55 KB) View source (C#) Checksums

  • Runs on Windows 10 or 11 — nothing to install
  • Connects to a Mac with Screen Sharing turned on

What it does

  • Fit to window or fixed zoom from 25% to 200%, with smooth scaling
  • Full screen with F11
  • Copy & paste plain text both ways
  • Mac-friendly keys — Ctrl can act as Cmd, so Ctrl+C copies on the Mac
  • Stays connected — spots a dropped link, reconnects by itself, and can keep the Mac awake
  • Live link status showing round-trip time
  • Tiny — a single 55 KB program, no installer

Set up the Mac (once)

  1. Open System Settings › General › Sharing and turn on Screen Sharing.
  2. Click ⓘ next to Screen Sharing, then Computer Settings.
  3. Turn on “VNC viewers may control screen with password” and set a password. Only the first 8 characters count.
  4. In MacVNC, type the Mac's IP address or name (e.g. my-mac.local) and that password.

“Windows protected your PC”?

MacVNC isn't code-signed (that costs hundreds a year), so Windows SmartScreen may warn you the first time. Click More info, then Run anyway.

Want to be sure it's the real file? In PowerShell run:

Get-FileHash .\MacVNC.exe

It should match:

Or read every line yourself — the full source is included, and you can build it with the C# compiler that ships with Windows (command in the readme).

Good to know

  • Use it at home or over a VPN. VNC password sign-in doesn't encrypt the connection, so don't open your Mac's Screen Sharing to the internet.
  • Your password is never saved. Settings live in %APPDATA%\MacVNC\settings.txt.
  • Different port? Use my-mac.local::5901.
  • Cmd key not working? Keyboard menu › “Cmd sends Meta”.
BudgetBuddy on a laptop and phone: safe-to-spend total, spending breakdown and recent transactions

v1.1 Open source · Runs in your browser · MIT licence

BudgetBuddy

Take control of your money. A household budget planner that tells you what's safe to spend until payday and what's going to happen to your money, all without a bank connection, an account or the cloud.

.zip · 95 KB · full source, README, tests

Checksums

  • Needs Any modern browser: Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari
  • Private Your numbers stay in your browser. Nothing is sent anywhere
  • New in 1.1 Bring your direct debits and salaries in from a spreadsheet (CSV), and export them back out

What's in it

  • Safe to spend until payday, per week and per day, after bills and a safety buffer
  • Budget & planner — a month-by-month grid like your spreadsheet, plan vs actual
  • Calendar & forecast — cash for every day and 12 months ahead
  • Accounts & debt — cards, loans and mortgage, with a payoff simulator
  • Goals — savings pots with target dates and an emergency-fund calculator
  • Light and dark mode, undo, backups, and a demo household to explore

Get started

  1. Try it here: press Try it now, then Try the demo household to look around.
  2. Use it for real: download and unzip it, then double-click index.html. It works offline.
  3. Press Export backup now and then, and keep the file somewhere safe.

Whatever you enter is saved in the browser you use, on that device. Clearing your browser data clears it too, so export backups.

Build on it

Plain HTML, CSS and JavaScript, with no frameworks, no build step and no dependencies. All money is handled in whole pence, so the sums are exact.

Includes 36 calculation tests: open tests/tests.html, or run node tests/run-tests.js.

Licence

MIT: free to use, change and share, including commercially. Just keep the copyright notice.

A planning tool, not financial advice.
